Document 11: Letter from Jane Addams to Florence Kelley, Hull's Cove, Maine, 25 July 1927, Florence Kelley Papers, New York Public Library (Jane Addams Papers Microfilm, reel 19, #257).

Introduction

Jane Addams declined to join Florence Kelley's planned libel suit against the DAR. Unfortunately the historian cannot revisit the ensuing conversation they had at one or the other's summer home on Penobscot Bay.

HULL'S COVE
MAINE

July 25 1927

Dear Sister Kelley

I don't believe I could go in for a libel suit.  It is not exactly my Quakerishness - its the whole situation.  I am coming very soon to see you and we can then talk it out, - but in the meantime do go on without me.  I am homesick to see you and am always devotedly yours,

Jane Addams
